Happy Friday Eve! All I have to say is thank goodness it is almost the weekend! So today I am starting my recap series from our Italy trip and I’m hitting it off with our first destination from our trip, Venice! I swear I felt like I was in a fairy tale walking the gorgeous streets of Venice! It is just beauty every corner you turn! Although, remember there are no cars in the whole city so be prepared for lots of walking! Let’s get started! <3
Griffin and I flew into to Venice, but the actual airport is not on the island so we took a bus and then the water taxi into the city. The water taxi can get super crowded but luckily we were one of the first ones on so we got a nice spot over looking the water and the Grand Canal on the way in! We checked into our Airbnb and then set off to explore! We stayed pretty close to St Mark’s Square so we hit there first!
The hustle and bustle of the Grand Canal
In St Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) you will find St Mark’s Basilica (above), which is the most gorgeous church I have ever seen (minus St. Peter’s but we will get to that later)! The architecture is just unreal! You can tour it for free, but I highly recommend booking your tickets online for 2€ so you can skip the long line, especially if you’re going during the busy season! Inside is just insane with all the gold mosaics, it was definitely a highlight for me!
Next skip on over to the Bell Tower, which again book online to skip the lines, to get the most AMAZING view of Venice from above! Also, there’s an elevator so that’s a huge plus ;)
After all of the St Mark’s Square exploring we worked up an appetite so we went to get some cicchetti and of course some wine! We made it our mission during our trip to try the different foods from every region in Italy and Venice is known for their cicchetti, which basically like small tapas or appetizers. Many of the bars serve them along with extremely well priced glasses of wine! You seriously can’t beat it!
Some of our favorite cicchetti spots were Bar all’Arco, Cantina Do Mori, Ostaria ai Storti, Cantina Do Spade, and our absolute favorite, Osteria Al Squero! Which the pictures are from below. It is right on a small canal away from the touristy area right across from an adorable gondola shop! Also, their cicchetti and spritz were on point!
We ended our first day with a nightly stroll. Venice really becomes magical at night and the streets become a lot more quiet! Check out the shot of the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge Griffin captured! So beautiful!
Day Two we slept in a bit and then started our day at a super adorable cafe, Caffe Del Doge, which had the best croissants and expresso I think we had the whole trip! We were going to do a gondola or boat ride this morning but ended up opting out since the prices for a gondola are outrageous and only splitting it with one other couple still would have been pricey so we decided to do some more shopping and exploring instead. All of the Venetian mask stores were my favorite! The detail on them are insane!
We grabbed some delicious pizza at Birraria La Corte for lunch. The weather was gorgeous so we sat outside and enjoyed the view of the square. After lunch we did some more exploring and checked out the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal during golden hour. So pretty!
We finished our last night with an amazing dinner at Taverna al Remer. The food was delish and the atmosphere was so authentic and romantic with candle light and a live pianist. I even got adventurist and tried the squid ink pasta. We ended the night early for an early rise the next morning to head to Cinque Terre, which I can’t wait to tell you all about next week! I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week and weekend! <3
