Happy Thursday loves! All I have to say is thank goodness it’s almost the weekend! I feel like this week has been dragging! So I get sooooo many questions on my closet office since we did everything ourselves and one the questions I get is how we painted the tile floors. Honestly I feel like the black floors make the room and it was actually super simple! It makes the floor look so much more lux with only the cost of paint! Ok let’s get to it!
Supplies used in this project:
Glidden Porch and Floor Paint
Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer
Painting and Cleaning Supplies
The first thing we needed to do was start with a bare room. We pulled everything out, removed the baseboards and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Now is the best time to paint the walls if you need to so we don’t have to worry about getting paint on our freshly painted floors. Also, be sure to mop the floor to start with a clean surface.
After the room is empty and the floor is cleaned, we applied a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer. This is a good all purpose primer that we’ve used on many projects. It creates a good even base for the paint to adhere to. We only applied one coat of primer since we were using black color paint for the floor. If you are using a lighter color, I would do a second coat to ensure you have an even base color to start from. Once we finished the base coat, we gave it a day to dry before moving to the next step. Also be sure to have a window open and have a fan on for proper ventilation.
Once the primer was dry, we started painting. We used Glidden Porch and Floor paint as we wanted it to be as durable as possible. We also chose the glossy finish to get a shiny black look. We used a standard paint roller for the majority of the floor and a paint brush for the edges and corners. Be sure to use a broom stick or get a long handle for the roller to save your back. This took two coats then we went back and touched up areas that needed it. Be sure to start at the furthest end of the room and work your way back to the door so you do not end up trapped and have to walk through wet paint to get out!
We let the fresh paint dry for two days then we put in new baseboards. It has been almost 9 months since we painted the floor and I have only noticed one small scuff (which was from repositioning the long heavy mirror not normal walking). Also my dog follows me every where so she is always in the room with me and her nails hasn’t scratched it at all! Super impressed! It makes me want to do the bathrooms! I hope you all have a fabulous rest of your week and weekend! <3
