Hey loves! So today I am tackling a topic I have been asked a lot about between photography clients and readers and it is that big question everyone wants to know after booking a photography session, what should I wear!? Engagement sessions are pretty easy since it is just two people, but the hard ones are definitely family photos. Patterns, colors, stripes, oh my! So hopefully this post can help you during you next family photo session! <3
The number one thing I always tell my clients is to wear something with movement, like a flowy maxi dress, skirt, or midi dress. It adds so much to the photos rather than feeling flat when you wear jeans or pants. I am the type of photographer that likes to get more action shots and photograph connections between families rather than the say cheese and look at the camera photos so when mom dances with her little girl or boy a flowy dress looks so much more dreamy!

For Spring/Summer photos I always recommend lighter colors and for Fall/Winter photos darker moodier colors, but honestly anything goes with me color wise! The most important part is sticking to a color scheme. I usually recommend starting with either mom’s dress or a little girl’s dress (since they are usually a pattern) and then pairing outfits to go with that pattern. Do not be too matchy matchy but do not go overboard on print. My rule of thumb is one bold print, a subtle print, and two solids. For example, mom in a floral, dad in a sold shirt that is a color from mom’s dress, son in a subtle stripe that is a neutral, and daughter in a sold dress that also coordinates to mom’s dress. See some ideas below!
An example of the bold print, subtle print, and two solids. Obviously Rach Parcell and I are on the same page! ;p Here are some other ideas with shoppable links:
